When Taste Moves Beyond Mass Production, And We Crave Authenticity

Mass production solved a lot of problems like speed, scale, accessibility and lower cost. But, it also created a sameness that is hard to unsee once you notice it. For those who can see the difference, slapping a standard, simple, stainless steel range hood to dominate a beautifully designed kitchen are finding themselves at a loss as to why the space doesn’t feel authentic.

The difference between functional and meaningful often comes down to one question: Was this made to fit everyone… or made with someone specifically in mind?

Seems we are wrestling with this question rolling into 2026 as information, visuals, and design flattens out and the human element is subdued. Perfectly planned doesn’t give us that certain something we look for to find truth and trust in the things we view and the spaces we live in.

When Your Taste Doesn’t Follow Templates…

We are all feeling a particular fatigue that comes from seeing the same spaces repeated over and over again. The same proportions, the same finishes, the same ideas, recycled over and over. 

At some point, you stop asking, “Is this popular? Is this in style? Will others like it?” and start asking, “Does this feel like me, or like my clients? Does this feel like something real, that brings me joy, and that I can be proud of?”

For those of us that want to say “yes”, mass-production can leave us knowing that something is off, and feels strongly hollow. It functions. It fills the space, but rarely reflects the nuance of the people living within the space. At the end of the day, that is what we are all craving, a reflection of who we are and what we love. And, anything less keeps us feeling like something is missing.

We believe that Design Trends 2026 will work hard to get us back on a more human track. Bringing us closer to personal style, than mass marketed sameness.
